The Emirates ID is the single most important document for anyone living in the UAE. Issued by the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP) — formerly known as ICA — it is a legal requirement for all UAE citizens and residents to apply for one and carry it at all times. Typing centers are authorised by ICP to handle the entire application process: form completion, document verification, fee collection and submission through the official e-channel system. This guide covers every Emirates ID service available through typing centers in 2026.

What Is the Emirates ID?
The Emirates ID is an identity card issued by the ICP to every UAE citizen and legal resident — including employees, investors, dependents and domestic workers. It is not optional. The card contains your full name, photo, nationality and a 15-digit unique identification number (starting with 784, the UAE country code) that stays with you permanently.
Electronic Chip
Stores up to 32,000 characters of personal and biometric data. Encrypted — only readable by authorised authorities.
9 Security Features
Ultraviolet ink, line drawing, laser engraving and precise lettering — exceeds security standards used in banking credit cards.
Fingerprint Biometric
Digital signature and authentication certificates stored on-chip. PKI (public key infrastructure) for secure transactions.
Why the Emirates ID Is Essential
Living in the UAE without a valid Emirates ID affects nearly every transaction. The card is required for:
- Banking: Opening and managing local bank accounts. Banks use Emirates ID for KYC (Know Your Customer) compliance and verification
- Housing: Renting property, registering your tenancy contract (Ejari in Dubai) and setting up utility accounts (DEWA, SEWA, FEWA)
- Telecom: Obtaining a mobile SIM card or home internet service from Etisalat, du or Virgin Mobile
- Travel: Using Smart Gates at UAE airports for passport-free immigration. UAE citizens use Emirates ID as a travel document within the GCC
- Healthcare: Accessing hospitals, clinics and pharmacies. Insurance providers link your policy to your Emirates ID number
- Government services: All federal and emirate-level digital services — visa applications, traffic fines, vehicle registration and labour contracts
- Voting: UAE citizens use Emirates ID to vote in Federal National Council elections
- International travel: Holding a UAE Emirates ID strengthens visa applications for Schengen, US and other third-country visas
Legal warning: It is against UAE law for any company to seize or withhold your Emirates ID card. Employers, businesses and service providers may scan or record the data on your card — but they cannot keep the physical card. Violations should be reported to judicial authorities (ICP circular).
New Emirates ID Application
All first-time UAE residents — and UAE citizens at birth registration — must apply for a new Emirates ID. The process is sequential and typing centers handle the paperwork end-to-end.
Who Needs a New Emirates ID
- All new UAE residents receiving their first residence visa (employees, investors, dependents)
- Newborn UAE citizens (registration at birth)
- GCC nationals establishing UAE residency
- Individuals who previously held a UAE visa that was fully cancelled and are now re-entering on a new sponsorship
Required Documents
- Original passport (valid for at least 6 months) + copy
- Valid UAE residence visa or entry permit
- Passport-sized photograph — white background, UAE specifications (typing centers can capture this on-site)
- Emirates ID application form — completed by the typing center in Arabic through the ICP e-channel
- Medical fitness certificate — mandatory for all applicants aged 18 and above before the Emirates ID can be issued. Children under 18 are exempt
Step-by-Step Process
- Visit a typing center: Present your passport and visa. The typing center completes the ICP electronic application form in Arabic, verifies your documents and collects the required fees (government + typing service)
- Biometric enrollment: Visit an ICP Customer Happiness Centre in person. An officer captures your fingerprints (all 10 fingers), takes your photograph and verifies your original documents. Applicants aged 15 and above must provide fingerprints and signature
- Application processing: ICP processes the application. Status can be tracked online via the ICP website (icp.gov.ae) or the UAEICP mobile app
- Card printing and delivery: Once the status shows "Card Printed," the physical card is dispatched. Delivery typically within 3–4 working days via courier (Zajel or Emirates Post depending on the emirate)
Total timeline: 5–10 working days from biometric enrollment to receiving the physical card. Digital version available immediately through the UAEICP app once the card is printed.
Emirates ID Renewal
Emirates ID renewal follows a streamlined process compared to the initial application. The card can be renewed up to 6 months before expiry — planning ahead avoids late fines and service gaps.
Renewal Timeline & Late Fines
- Early renewal: Up to 6 months before the expiry date
- Grace period after expiry: 30 days to renew without penalties
- Late fine: AED 20 per day after the 30-day grace period, capped at a maximum of AED 1,000 per card
- Strategic timing: Start the process 1–2 weeks before expiry. New cards are issued from the approval date — not the previous expiry — so early submission maximises your paid validity period
Required Documents for Renewal
- Original Emirates ID (current or recently expired)
- Passport with valid residence visa
- No new photo needed — ICP uses existing biometric data on file (unless appearance has changed significantly)
- If renewing after age 15 for the first time: fingerprint and signature must be captured at an ICP service centre
Renewal Process
- Visit typing center: Present current Emirates ID and passport. Typing center completes the renewal application through ICP Smart Services
- Pay fees: Government fee (based on selected validity — 1, 2 or 3 years) + typing center service charge
- Biometric update: Only required if renewing after turning 15 for the first time, or if specifically requested by ICP
- Receive card: Processing and delivery follow the same timeline as new applications — find an Emirates ID typing center for detailed renewal guidance
Emirates ID Replacement — Lost, Stolen or Damaged
If your Emirates ID is lost, stolen or damaged, you must apply for a replacement. The cardholder is legally required to report a lost or stolen card to ICP within 7 days of the loss.
Required Documents
- Lost or stolen: Police report or loss report filed through the ICP app / UAE Pass. Some emirates require a police station visit; others accept online reporting
- Damaged: Bring the damaged card to the typing center — it will be surrendered as part of the replacement process
- Original passport + copy
- Valid residence visa
Replacement Fees
- Government replacement fee: AED 300
- Typing center service fee: AED 30–70
- Total approximately: AED 330–370
- Urgent 24-hour replacement (expatriates eligible): additional fee applies
Timeline: same as new application — 5–10 working days for standard processing.

Updating Personal Details on Emirates ID
Emirates ID holders are legally required to report any change in personal details to ICP within one month from the date of change. This includes:
- Change of residential address or phone number
- Change of passport (new passport number) — must update residency and Emirates ID details immediately
- Change of marital status (for UAE citizens)
- Change of nationality (for dual citizens or naturalised citizens)
Data updates are processed through ICP Customer Happiness Centres or the UAEICP smart app. Typing centers can assist with the application form for data updates — the same process as other Emirates ID services.
Digital Emirates ID — UAEICP App & UAE Pass
The physical card is only half the picture. The UAE's digital identity ecosystem makes your Emirates ID accessible and functional from your phone on day one.
UAEICP Smart App
The official ICP mobile application — available on iOS and Android — provides digital access to your Emirates ID and residence visa. Once your card status shows "Printed," a digital version is available immediately through the app — valid for most purposes while you wait for physical delivery.
UAE Pass
UAE Pass is the UAE's national digital identity platform. After receiving your physical Emirates ID, activate UAE Pass to:
- Sign documents with a legally recognised digital signature
- Log in to all federal and local government services without visiting physical offices
- Authenticate transactions for banking, telecom and utility providers
- Access the ICP Smart Services portal for any future Emirates ID or visa transactions
Emirates ID Cancellation
Emirates ID cancellation is linked to residence visa cancellation — it is not a separate process. When your residence visa is cancelled by your sponsor, the Emirates ID is automatically deactivated in the ICP system. The cancellation is processed through:
- GDRFA for Dubai-issued visas
- ICP for visas issued by all other emirates (Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Fujairah, Ras Al Khaimah, Umm Al Quwain)
The sponsor (employer or family sponsor) submits the cancellation request. Ensure proper cancellation before leaving the UAE permanently — failure to cancel correctly can result in entry bans or future visa rejection.
Emirates ID — Legal Duties & Compliance
- Carry your card: All residents must carry their Emirates ID at all times. Digital version on the UAEICP app is acceptable in most situations
- Report loss within 7 days: Legal requirement — failure to report can result in penalties
- Update details within 1 month: Any change of address, phone number, passport or personal details must be reported to ICP within 30 days
- Renew before expiry: Late renewal fine of AED 20/day (max AED 1,000) applies after the 30-day grace period
- Do not surrender your card: Employers, hotels, service providers — no company may withhold your physical Emirates ID. They may scan the data, not keep the card. Violations should be reported to judicial authorities
- Keep digital copies: Always maintain a digital copy on your phone or in a digital wallet. The UAEICP app provides an official digital version
